Seattle police are still searching for a second suspect after three people were killed and several others injured at a food festival on Sunday.
According to police, two suspects shot at each other. One, who is 15, is in custody and officials believe the second, who has not been identified, poses no threat to the public.
Shots were fired at the Space Needle – one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions – at around 6pm local time (0100 GMT) and as the annual Bite of Seattle food festival drew even more people to the area.
Two deaths were confirmed at the scene, with one person later dying in hospital. A two-year-old boy was among the injured.
According to authorities, the three people who died were a 19-year-old man, a 44-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman. Four of the injured were hospitalized in a stable condition, while a fifth were hospitalized.
Police Chief Shon Barnes said at a news conference Monday that it was possible one of those killed was the second shooter.
Sunday was the final day of the annual three-day free food festival, which attracts around 350,000 people each year.
Videos posted online showed people crouching on the floor and taking cover behind pillars and merchandise shelves in the Space Needle lobby during the shooting.
Several witnesses told a local television station affiliated with CBS News, the BBC’s U.S. affiliate, that they heard several shots before running away.
“At first I thought there were fireworks and then everyone was pouring out and running past us,” Nick Bate told the TV station.
Leanne Coles, another witness, told the station she used the Space Needle to keep track of her whereabouts.
“Everyone started running, and so we just ran too, ran through the yard, ducked and decided to keep running with the crowd,” she said.
Faith Adia Hunter told the Associated Press that one of the shooters was near her and her friends when they heard the shots, prompting them to seek refuge at the Seattle Children’s Museum.
“We were right next to him when it started, so we ran,” she said. “So we also ran into the building with the crowd.”
