Last year I became a complete beginner again.
…it didn’t go as I expected.
I have been a trainer for over 15 years. It is my passion and the reason I was hired at Nerd Fitness in 2018.
But my role at Nerd Fitness has grown. Nowadays I’m not just responsible for our coaching.
I’m also responsible for making sure that the right people in the world – the people we were created to help – actually can find us.
As it turns out, that’s its own huge, complicated, and overwhelming problem.
I had a million questions:
- How do I write a good newsletter?
- How do I create a video that someone will actually want to watch? And what do I do with my hands when I film?!
- Long form? Short form? SEO? AEO? Social media? I haven’t posted anything on my own social media since January 2021 (not kidding). You better start figuring it all out.😅
- What data is important to track? How can I track it? What about software, split testing and all that?
- And most importantly, how can I do this in a way that feels authentic to who we are: nerds who are turned off by all the rhetoric, tricks and false promises that are rampant in the fitness industry? 🧐

And everywhere I looked there were competing voices telling me what was most important, what I should focus on, and how much time I should spend on what.
So I did what any good nerd does when faced with a new problem…
I started Collect underwear.

I have read dozens of articles and guides. I subscribed to YouTube channels and binged their content. I attended live workshops. I bought programs. You name it.
And it helped. At least a little.
But I kept falling into a familiar loop.
I would look at what I did and think:
“That’s not good enough.”
“Is this actually what I should be working on?”
“I need to do better before I publish this.”
“Maybe I should just collect some more data.”
I was stuck.
I realized it wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be and that would stop me from taking action.
I felt butterflies in my stomach every time I hit send on an email.
Classic “all or nothing” mentality.
If I couldn’t do it perfectly, why do it at all?
Then I had a moment of realization
During a conversation with Coach Justin (one of our amazing team members 🙌) – I realized:
I longed for… a coach. 🤦♂️
Just for the marketing version of how to reach people more effectively.
No further article. Not another 40 minute video from another expert.
I wanted one person.
Someone who is willing to sit down with me, learn about our situation and our history, take on this whole complicated mess and say:
“Hey, I’ve seen this before. I’m here to help. Here’s where we start.”
Someone to speak up when I hit roadblocks.
Who would keep me focused on getting actual things done instead of endlessly questioning?
Who would catch me when I started beating myself up and get me moving again?
Because that’s exactly what our trainers do for fitness.
I simply hadn’t understood the connections before.
I get emails like this every week:
“I’ve read all the articles and watched a lot of videos. I just can’t put it all together, and I’m embarrassed that I haven’t solved this yet. I’m tired of stewing alone in this mess.”
Does this sound familiar?
When I was a beginner again, I learned something I thought I already knew: The problem is not the lack of information.
It is Orientation and support from someone you know and trust.
This is where coaching comes into play.
A coach is not another voice adding to the noise.
You are the person who turns down the noise.
Who knows you, simplifies things, points you to the ONE thing next, and sticks with it as you figure it out together.
Not every situation needs a coach
Sometimes we just need that quick resource or starting point.
But when you’re carrying one of those big, complex “I can’t seem to solve this” problems – one that leaves you feeling lost, stuck, and alone – it’s not a problem that can be solved quickly.
This is a “someone in your corner” problem.
So if you are overloaded and constantly think: “Why can’t I handle this fitness thing?”
You are exactly the type of person we were brought here to support.
I’d like to have a conversation about what’s going on and what a collaboration might look like.
Just click “Reply” and tell me where you’re stuck.
We’ll find out together.
