The Texas Longhorns have nothing to gain by answering the Texas Tech challenge, accepting terms would be foolish

The huge gust of wind blowing from the Lone Star State isn’t a tornado, although it’s definitely the season for it.

No, it’s just a bunch of hot air from a few College football Coaches shout at each other even though they know there will be no consequences on the field.

For those who don’t know, Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian made a not-so-subtle dig at the strength of Texas Tech’s schedule while he was head coach of the Red Raiders Joey Maguire clapped backThey said they would like to play the Longhorns and were even willing to cancel their non-conference game against Abilene Christian to accommodate that.

Before we move forward, we need to be clear: this will never happen.

Texas and Texas Tech would never cancel games with non-conference opponents to play each other, nor would their conferences and the NCAA leave her.

But if they could, I’m here to tell you that the Longhorns should flatly reject the terms of the Red Raiders and Maguires.

Texas has nothing to gain by incorporating technology into its schedule and everything to lose.

Which teams have the toughest schedule heading into the college football season?

In a time when there are teams Canceling difficult non-conference games left and right to create an easier path to the College Football Playoff, why on earth would the Longhorns make an already brutal schedule even more difficult?

Take a look at last season, where a Texas team went 9-3 to end the year playing some of the best football in the country and narrowly missed the playoffs despite losing 3-1 to top-10 teams starting in October.

There’s no doubt that the Longhorns would have entered the CFP as a top-10 team if they had scheduled an in-state FCS game instead of Ohio State in Week 1 last year and finished 10-2.

WHICH TEAMS HAVE THE MOST VALUABLE COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROSTERS TO START THE 2026 SEASON?

This year, Sarkisian and his team will play Ohio State again, in addition to two Texas State teams that were bowl eligible last season in UTSA and Texas State.

Not exactly a walk in the park of a non-conference slate, but it only gets more difficult once they get into the league.

The Longhorns play on the road against Tennessee, LSU and rival Texas A&M, plus home games against Florida and Ole Miss, not to mention their annual neutral site showdown against Oklahoma.

Three of those teams were playoff teams in 2025, and both LSU and Tennessee should improve significantly next season.

Add to that the fact that Florida has one of the best rosters year in and year out (regardless of record) and defeated Texas last season, and the Longhorns undoubtedly face a gauntlet in 2026.

Adding Texas Tech would do nothing to bolster their resume in the eyes of the CFP selection committee, so a loss in this hypothetical scenario would hurt far more than a win would help.

I understand why Maguire would want to talk tough in this scenario.

First, he probably knows this fantasy matchup would never happen, and second, since Tech’s schedule and resume are significantly less daunting than Texas’, adding another Power Four playoff contender would only strengthen their schedule.

Texas and Texas Tech will have every opportunity to compete against each other in the CFP. I doubt any of them would want to jeopardize that by suffering an additional regular season loss.
