Summer is fast approaching and the first sign for us is always that our hills are no longer green but golden, which they will remain until the next rainy season in autumn. But the weather was lovely for riding, it didn’t get too hot until later in the afternoon when I had already finished. However, I have to be a little careful about the length of the ride because there is some pollen in the air that gives me an allergic headache. Not bad if I keep the trips under 3 hours.
Last Tuesday my group went on their “Taco Tuesday” ride on the first Tuesday of the month. We head south to San Martin, then turn east and turn north again on the east side of the valley and up the Coyote Creek Trail to Metcalf Park, cross Malech Road and return to downtown for lunch.

On Saturday I took my stand with me in search of some off-road riding.

Yesterday was a tough day, a brisk two hour and 50 minute ride with some strength training and intervals on the bike. Then I did some upper body strength training in the garage.

On the other side begins the South San Jose district. The neighborhood on the west side borders the foothills of Santa Teresa. You can drive north here for about 10 miles, enjoying beautiful views of the open countryside and Santa Teresa Park along the way.I climbed the steep hill on Bernal Road that leads to both the gates of the IBM research facility and Santa Teresa Park. I worked in research here from 1984 to 1987. I heard it’s closed now so I thought I’d check the status. But the gates are still closed. IBM is probably keeping people out until they sell the building. If these gates were open you could drive down the west side of Harry Road to Almaden Valley.Part of Santa Teresa ParkBlast back down Bernal HillThe Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch is now a county parkThere is a dirt road through the ranch that is a fun alternative to the road.
