In an interview with FRANCE 24’s Sharon Gaffney, Dr. Nathaniel Powell, West Africa analyst at Oxford Analytica and research fellow at Lancaster University’s Center for War and Diplomacy, said the jihadist group JNIM operating in Mali “does not appear to be able to capture and hold an urban area for any length of time, so Bamako is not yet at risk of conquest, but the long-term prospects certainly do not look good.”
