“I don’t take it personally”

Wayne Rooney insists he does not take criticism personally as frustration grows among Plymouth Argyle fans over the team’s poor recent results.

Pressure is mounting on Rooney as the former England captain’s side are currently bottom of the Championship table following a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United on Sunday.

Argyle have lost six and drawn three of their last nine games, leading to a section of fans chanting for Rooney to be sacked during the game against Oxford.

However, the 39-year-old says the criticism doesn’t affect him and he believes he can turn the team’s fortunes around.

“When you lose games like we lose, there is that frustration, so I understand that and I don’t take it personally,” Rooney told the BBC.

“I think that criticism is normal given the results we have in front of us.

“You have to feel like you can do it. I’ll go back, watch the game again, evaluate the game and prepare for Bristol (City).

“I understand (the fans’ reaction), I was there myself when I was young and I was there as a fan when you wanted to see your team win.”

Rooney was appointed Plymouth head coach back in May following the sacking of Ian Foster, but the former Manchester United player has endured a difficult time in England’s second division this season.

The Pilgrims won just four league games all season, drew six, lost 13 and conceded 51 league goals.

Asked if he felt secure in his job, Rooney replied: “That’s a question for the board. I understand how football works, so all I can do is try to work as hard as possible.

“We’re all trying to do the right things and help each other win games – unfortunately that hasn’t been the case in the last few weeks.”
