Oakland police are investigating a crash involving BART police cars that left several people injured

Several people were injured in a multi-vehicle crash involving two police vehicles in Oakland, California, on Saturday, according to police officials.

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) told Fox News Digital that the accident occurred in the 700 block of Mandela Parkway, near the West Oakland train station. Photos from the scene showed wrecked police vehicles with broken windows and open doors, as well as debris littering the street.

Authorities were alerted to the situation at around 2:45 p.m. local time. According to the Oakland Police Department, two Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) police cars were involved in the accident.

“Several vehicle occupants were injured in the collision,” an OPD spokesman said. “Paramedics were on scene to assist and transport people to area hospitals for treatment.”

Authorities are still investigating the crash and its background.

“It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs played a role in this collision,” the statement continued.

The OPD did not disclose whether any BART officers were injured.

In August, the president of the Oakland Police Officer’s Association (OPOA) criticized progressive then-Mayor Sheng Thao called back in November for allegedly not doing enough to combat crime in the city, considered one of the most dangerous in the Golden State.

“Our citizens feel the tragedies every day. That they can’t leave their own home or go to the streets of Oakland, call 911 and not get the services they need,” said Huy Nguyen of the OPOA said at the time.
