Some Windows 11 users can no longer install security updates (but there is a solution)

If you’ve recently built a computer, congratulations! You should be proud. There’s nothing better than turning on a new computer, seeing it working perfectly, and breathing a sigh of relief knowing you’re done and don’t have to spend hours trying to figure out why it’s not working. Well, I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but if you installed Windows on your PC in October or November, you might not be quite done yet.

According to an update to Microsoft known issues pageCopies of Windows installed via USB or CD with the October 2024 and November 2024 updates are affected by a bug that prevents them from accepting future security updates. These updates are important to protect your computer from viruses and exploits, but luckily there is a solution. It’s just a bit tedious.

Essentially, you need to reinstall Windows with new installation media that contains the December 2024 Update. Just navigate to Microsoft’s Windows 11 download pagescroll down to Create Windows 11 installation mediaopen mediacreationtool.exe and follow the instructions in the app. It’s straightforward, albeit tedious.

Luckily, the company says it’s working on a fix, so hopefully a better solution that doesn’t require reinstalling your operating system is on the way. Still, if you have issues with security updates, it’s better to make fixes as soon as possible.

A plus point is if you downloaded the October or November Windows 11 updates via Windows Update or Microsoft Update Catalog websiteyou should not need to take any further action. The issue only affects people who installed the October or November updates via physical media (which is common among IT professionals and some PC manufacturers).

The issue joins a known list of problems with the Windows 11 24H2 update, including issues with certain audio devices, Outlook, etc even some Ubisoft video games.
