Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran will miss three games after his attempt to have his red card at Newcastle overturned on appeal failed.
The 21-year-old Colombia international was sent off by referee Anthony Taylor after 32 minutes of Boxing Day’s 3-0 defeat at St James’ Park after appearing to step on defender Fabian Schar, drawing an angry reaction from head coach Unai Emery later hinted that the club would appeal.
However, their bid proved unsuccessful and Duran now faces a three-match ban for violent behavior.
A statement on Villa’s official X account said: “Aston Villa can confirm that our decision to appeal against Jhon Duran’s red card in our game against Newcastle United has been rejected. The player will now miss our next three games.”
Emery insisted after the game that it was not a red card offence, adding: “I don’t think he kicked him intentionally. Of course we will appeal and hope that it is not three games, because that is a very high penalty for this action.”
The striker will miss Premier League games against Brighton and Leicester around the turn of the year, as well as the FA Cup third round game against West Ham on January 10.
