“Ministers intend to focus on Canada’s efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration, as well as the measures outlined in the Canada Border Plan, as well as the negative impact that the imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods will have on both Canada and Canada the United States would have,” Comeau added in a statement.

The Christmas Day statement came after Trump suggested to Trudeau that if tariffs on Canada would destroy Canada’s economy, perhaps Canada should become the tariff 51st US state.

Meanwhile, Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Canadian imports have unsettled Canada, which is heavily integrated into the U.S. economy.
About 60% of US crude oil imports come from Canada, and 85% of US electricity imports also come from Canada.

Nearly $3.6 billion Canadian and $2.7 billion worth of goods and services cross the border every day. Canada is the top export destination for 36 US states.
