Trump shares a social media post attacking “radical left-wing lunatics” and says Canada could become the 51st US state.
The outgoing and new presidents of the United States had different messages Christmas holidayswith Democrat Joe Biden urging Americans to reflect and unite, while Republican Donald Trump delivered a holiday greeting and then took aim at his political opponents.
Biden reported a video tour of the White House Christmas decorations posted on YouTube late on Christmas Eve on Tuesday in which he urged Americans to put aside “all the noise and everything that divides us.”
“We are here on this earth to care for one another and to love one another,” Biden said in voiceover as a camera pans past decorated evergreen trees and decorated fireplaces in the White House. “Too often we see each other as enemies, not as neighbors, not as fellow Americans,” he said.
Biden urged Americans to take a moment of “quiet reflection” to remember to treat each other with dignity and respect, to “live in the light” and to remember that there is more to what the Americans united than divided. “We are truly blessed to live in this nation,” he said.
Trump posted a “Merry Christmas” message on Truth Social on Christmas Day morning with a photo of himself and his wife Melania, followed by more than two dozen reposts of articles or other social media posts that supported his political positions on issues like Defense Secretary candidate Pete Hegseth and his pursuit of Greenland and the United States Panama Canal.
Trump later released a lengthy “Merry Christmas” message in which he claimed Chinese soldiers were operating the Panama Canal and criticized the Canadian prime minister Justin TrudeauBiden and the Democrats.
“Merry Christmas to the radical left-wing lunatics who continually try to obstruct our court system and our elections,” Trump wrote. “They know their only chance of survival is to be pardoned by a man who has absolutely no idea what he’s doing.”
“Also to Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada, whose citizen taxes are far too high, but if Canada became our 51st state, their taxes would be cut by more than 60 percent,” Trump wrote.
Biden took office in 2021 pledging to “end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural against urban, conservative against liberal,” and said he withdrew from the 2024 presidential campaign in July to protect the country unite.
Biden’s Democrats lost all battleground states and both chambers of Congress during the election campaign Election in November.
In some ways, polarization has increased in the country, including during the 2024 campaign, which saw Biden once again face off against Trump, before Kamala Harris took over the Democratic nomination, before ultimately losing the presidential election.
Trump has called for the prosecution of perceived political enemies and the U.S. takeover of the Panama Canal and promised a restructuring of the federal government.
