Maresca isn’t playing mind games and says it’s a “reality” that Chelsea are not in the title race

Enzo Maresca insists his claim that Chelsea are not in the title race is not an attempt to take the pressure off his players.

The Italian has repeatedly downplayed the Blues’ chances of winning the Premier League, despite his side starting Christmas in second place, four points behind leaders Liverpool.

Maresca, who before his summer arrival did a remarkable job of bringing some calm to a club that seemed perpetually in chaos, said: “For me it’s the reality, not the pressure.” I would like to such pressure.

“I say we are not there because that is the reality for me. It’s all about continuing to improve and winning games.”

We are happy to be where we are – Maresca

However, Maresca is pleased with Chelsea’s progress, although he believes other teams – including struggling Manchester City – will perform strongly as the season progresses.

He added: “It’s almost half, so the table reflects the teams and their position. Liverpool are doing fantastic from day one. The team is already experiencing this moment, which is important. We are happy to be where we are at this moment.

“I think Manchester City will be there in the end. You are living something that has probably never happened before. At the end of each game they suffer a new injury. It’s a very bad situation.

“In terms of our style of play and points, we are exceeding our expectations. For us it’s all about figuring out how we can improve the players and the team.”

Maresca is happy with Fernandez’s improvement

Chelsea host west London neighbors Fulham on Boxing Day and will be looking to get back to winning ways after Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Everton.

They will be without midfielder Romeo Lavia, who remains unavailable.

However, Enzo Fernandez will play as he has shown steady improvement in recent weeks.

“It’s good that the player can concentrate on what he can do and we’re trying to help him,” Maresca said. “We are very happy with Enzo. We put him in the bag for the last half hour (at Everton). He helps us a lot. He also grows with leadership.”
