Bill Clinton is released from the hospital after being treated for the flu


Former US President Bill Clinton will be home for Christmas after being discharged from a hospital in Washington, DC, where he was treated for flu.

The 78-year-old Democrat was admitted with a fever on Monday afternoon.

A spokesman said Clinton was released Tuesday in gratitude for the care he received at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

The spokesman said Clinton sent everyone his warmest wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season. Clinton, who served two terms as president between 1993 and 2001, campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris in her presidential bid this fall.

In the years since Clinton left the White House, he has faced a number of health problems.

In 2004, he underwent quadruple bypass surgery after suffering from persistent chest pain and shortness of breath. Clinton returned to the hospital in 2005 for surgery for a partially collapsed lung and had a pair of stents implanted in a coronary artery in 2010.
