Former US President Bill Clinton was admitted to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC on Monday after developing a fever.
The 78-year-old was admitted “in the afternoon for evaluation and observation,” Angel Urena, Clinton’s deputy chief of staff, said in a statement.
“He remains in good spirits and deeply appreciates the excellent care he is receiving.”
Clinton, a Democrat who served two terms as president from January 1993 to January 2001, gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this summer and endorsed Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris’ unsuccessful bid for the White House ahead of November’s election a.
In the years since Clinton left the White House, he has faced a number of health problems.
History of health problems
In 2004, he underwent quadruple bypass surgery after suffering from persistent chest pain and shortness of breath. Clinton returned to the hospital in 2005 for surgery for a partially collapsed lung and had a pair of stents implanted in a coronary artery in 2010.
Clinton responded by adopting a largely vegan diet, which led to weight loss and improved health.

An aide to the former president said at the time that Clinton had a urological infection that spread to his bloodstream but was on the mend and had never suffered septic shock, a potentially life-threatening condition. The aide said Clinton was in the hospital’s intensive care unit at the time, but was not being treated in the intensive care unit.
