Two goals for Salah as the Reds extend their lead with victory over Spurs

Mohamed Salah scored twice in eight minutes and assisted two more goals as Liverpool beat Tottenham to move four points clear at the top of the Premier League and leave Spurs in the bottom half.

Luis Diaz and Alexis Mac Allister scored first-half headers before Dominik Szoboszlai fired in a pass from Salah just before half-time, restoring the visitors’ two-goal lead after James Maddison responded from just outside the penalty area.

Salah, who had hit the crossbar in the goalless result, then fired twice from close range before Dejan Kulusevski volleyed in for Spurs, who had taken one point from their last four home league games.

Dominic Solanke’s finish gave the home striker his third goal in three games, only for Diaz to tap in from Salah’s ball to cap a hugely entertaining contest.

Liverpool will be top of the table at Christmas for the first time since 2020/21, although the 2019/20 season is the only time they have been in that position and won the title in the last seven.

Tottenham vs Liverpool

One of Liverpool’s 24 attempts on goal would have alarmed Tottenham fans after 18 minutes when Salah hit the woodwork as part of a dominant start from Arne Slot’s players.

Diaz then scored his sixth goal of the season from a superb pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, setting in motion another menacing performance that left Spurs in an embarrassment the likes of which they had suffered only once before.

Tottenham last conceded six goals at home in the Premier League in a 6-1 defeat to Chelsea in December 1997, but poor performances have become a habit for them under Postecoglou.

Tottenham concede more goals

Manchester United scored three goals in Thursday’s Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to threaten a comeback, 11 days after Chelsea won 4-3 in the league there.

Spurs’ defensive deficiencies appear to be untenable and their tally of two goals more than Liverpool and second-placed Chelsea is no consolation after such results.

They are eight points behind fourth-placed Nottingham Forest and nine above the relegation zone before traveling to the City Ground on Thursday (3pm GMT).

Liverpool are in action at 8pm on the same day and host fourth-bottom Leicester City, who lost 3-0 at home to third-bottom Wolves on Sunday.
