At least 28 people, including children, have died in a wave of Israeli military attacks across the Gaza Strip, according to the Gaza Civil Defense Authority.
The affected facilities included a school housing displaced families, killing eight people, including four children, over the weekend, the agency said.
It comes as the United Nations calls on Israel to stop its attacks near a hospital in northern Gaza.
The Israeli military claimed there was a Hamas command center on the grounds of the Musa bin Nusair school in Gaza City and did not comment on reports of attacks by the hospital.
“Hamas is systematically violating international law,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on social media, adding that Israel’s response would be to “act with force and determination against the terrorist organizations.”
Gaza Civil Defense Authority spokesman Mahmoud Bassal told AFP that the school had been converted into housing for Palestinians displaced by the war.
A displaced person who had been staying at the school, Abu, told BBC Arabic that the attack occurred while he was sleeping.
“We were sleeping peacefully, then suddenly we woke up to the sound of a very violent explosion,” he said.
Another man, Mahmoud, said he was sleeping in a tent in the schoolyard when the attack took place.
“Stones and shrapnel flew, the walls of the school fell on our heads,” he told BBC Arabic.
On Sunday, Pope Francis condemned Israel’s attacks on Gaza for the second day in a row.
He expressed his pain when he “thought of such atrocities, of the machine guns on children, of the bombing of schools and hospitals.”
The Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, said the generators were hit and claimed the Israeli army had targeted the fuel tank.
The head of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, appealed to the IDF to stop attacks in the area around the hospital.
Saturday evening’s reports of “bombing near Kamal Adwan Hospital and the order to evacuate the hospital are deeply worrying,” he said in a statement on social media.
“We call for an immediate ceasefire in the area surrounding the hospital and to protect patients and health workers.”
The hospital’s director also released a statement saying that the Israel Defense Forces treated the hospital “as if we were a military facility.”
“Anyone leaving the hospital is at risk of being attacked,” said Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.
He added that shifting hospital operations would put patients at risk and called for health workers to be “allowed to operate without the risk of evacuation.”
Israel has not commented on reports of an evacuation order.
The BBC has contacted the IDF for comment.
Palestinian groups involved in the fighting told the BBC A ceasefire agreement is “closer than ever before”.
More than 45,000 Palestinians were killed during the 14-month war between Israel and Hamas, according to figures from the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza.
The war began when Hamas-led gunmen launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 others hostage.
