Market attack suspect in custody amid anger over security failures

A suspect has appeared in court after an attack on a German Christmas market killed five people and injured more than 200 others on Friday.

The suspect, a doctor from Saudi Arabia, is Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, who came to Germany in 2006 and was recognized as a refugee in 2016.

This comes as German authorities face increasing backlash after the alleged attacker used an access lane for emergency vehicles to drive into the market.

During a visit on Saturday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, ministers and regional political leaders were harassed by members of the public, some appearing outraged at what was criticized as a security breach.
