In September, when the mass rape trial that has shocked people around the world was just beginning, Gisèle Pelicot said she wanted people to know her name.
And now it’s all 51 men charged in connection with Gisèle’s drug use, rape and sexual assault were found guilty from a French dish, we can know theirs.
One of those men was Pelicot’s now-ex-husband Dominique Pelicot, who was sentenced to a maximum of 20 years for drugging and raping his wife for nearly a decade and inviting other men to his home to participate.
The 50 other men were often dubbed in French media as “Mr. Every Man” or “Mr. Every Man”.
“They just seem like your next door neighbors. They could be your next door neighbors. And what really shocked many French people in the end is that they were their next-door neighbors,” said New York Times journalist Catherine Porter said in The daily Podcast earlier this week.
Most of them were between 27 and 74 years old and had standard jobs such as truck driver, carpenter, prison guard, nurse, IT expert, local journalist, gardener, DJ and former firefighter.
“I think it has raised the awareness of many people who may have previously thought that such acts of sexual cruelty were rare and only committed by so-called ‘monsters,'” said Ummni Khan, an associate professor at Carleton University’s School of Law and Legal Studies in Ottawa, CBC News said.
Most lived within 30 miles of the Pelicots. picturesque village of Mazanwhich lies in vineyards below Mont Ventoux in southeastern France.
Several men had wives, children, or both. Some were grandfathers. Despite video evidence, most denied the allegations made against them.
The court found 46 people guilty of rape, two of attempted rape and two of sexual assault. Under French law, it has not yet been possible to reveal their full identity. according to BBC.

Dominique Pelicot: Guilty of the aggravated rape of his ex-wife Gisèle. He is 72 years old and married Gisèle in 1973. The now-divorced couple had three children and Gisele said she thought they had a happy marriage. Pelicot seemed to have struggled professionally; he worked as an electrician and then in real estate, but had to ask family members for loans. Speaking in court in September, he said he had had a difficult upbringing and had been a victim of rape himself. He said he had wanted his wife to participate in partner swapping and that her refusal, along with trauma from his youth, helped trigger his abusive behavior. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Thursday.

Jean Pierre Marechal: Guilty of attempted and aggravated rape of his own wife and drug taking. He was the only defendant who was not accused of raping or abusing Gisèle Pelicot. Instead, encouraged by Dominique Pelicot, he drugged his own wife and had Pelicot come to his home several times to rape her. He worked at a garden center and had no criminal record before his arrest. Some of his six children testified on his behalf. Sentenced to 12 years in prison. He is 63.

Dominique Davies: Guilty of aggravated rape. Davies, 45, a truck driver and former soldier, raped Gisèle during six visits to the Pelicots’ home starting in 2015. Davies, who grew up in a foster family, told police he began visiting the now-closed website coco.fr, where he hooked up with Dominique Pelicot because his wife had no sexual desire. The fact that Gisèle was “completely submissive and reduced to a sexual object” contributed to his arousal, the police report says. He said he left his clothes outside the patio door of the Pelicots’ house so he could quickly escape if Gisèle woke up. In court he acknowledged “the material facts” evidenced by the video footage but said he had “no intention to commit a criminal offence”. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Romain Vandevelde: Guilty of aggravated rape according to BBC. Age 63. Vandevelde had a painful childhood, according to court documents. The fourth of nine children, his home was extremely violent and he was raped as a child. He married, joined the army and later divorced. He visited the Pelicots’ home six times in 2019 and 2020 and told the court he was lonely. He admitted that he knew he was HIV positive when he raped Gisèle without wearing a condom. He said he was being treated for the disease and could not transmit the virus. He denied the rape allegations and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Joseph Cocco: Guilty of aggravated sexual assault. Cocco, 69, was sentenced to three years in prison, two of which were suspended, The Guardian reports. According to the New York Timeshe’s a swinger and showed up at the Pelicot house for what he thought was a threesome. After “caressing her bottom,” he told the court that he left the court when he heard Gisèle snoring.

Christian Lescole: Guilty of aggravated rape and sentenced to nine years in prison, according to BBC. The publication adds that he is a volunteer firefighter and has two daughters. He’s 57, he says the guardian.

Lionel Rodríguez: Found guilty of attempted rape with aggravating circumstances and sentenced to eight years in prison the independent. Rodriguez, 44, worked at the same supermarket where Dominique Pelicot was caught filming women’s skirts, leading to a police investigation against him.
