A touching gesture from Travis Kelce as a tribute to his brother Jason may not be all it seems.
While chatting with the sports presenter Charissa Thompson on the episode of her podcast on Thursday, December 19th, “I won’t lie about Kylie Kelce” Jason’s wife Kylie poked holes in a story Travis had previously told.
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis, 35, claimed the reason he wears number 87 on his jersey is because: honor his brother Jason, who was born in 1987.
Thompson, 42, recalled the moment Travis made the revelation in an interview she was involved with for NFL Films.
“That’s when Travis told me he wears 87 because Jason…was born that year,” Thompson said before Kylie intervened.
“Jason still calls it bull,” said Kylie, 32. “Jason is still upset by this revelation. He said, ‘No, you got the 87’ and was like, ‘Uh, how do I remember that?’ It’s my brother’s birth year.'”
Regardless of whether the story is true or not, Thompson admitted, “Well, it’s a sweet feeling. It’s a beautiful story.”
Kylie agreed and replied, “It was so sweet.”
NFL Films shared an interview with the brothers in December 2023 in which Travis provided information about his jersey number.
“If there’s a Kelce legacy, two brothers making it to the NFL, it all started in 1987 because that big guy was born in 1987,” Travis said of 37-year-old Jason during the interview.
Travis and Jason developed one strong brotherly bond over the years and no one is ever shy about praising their siblings in public.
Jason gushed about Travis reaching his third Super Bowl in February 2024. He described the experience of watching Travis play as “a little different” than being there in the big game.
“I just love being a fan. Get excited and just watch good football. I can’t wait to watch it,” Jason told NFL Network Cameron Wolfe at the time. “Whenever you watch a loved one compete, you feel a very proud feeling. It’s completely different than competing alone.”
Jason added: “Obviously my brother and I love each other very much. We cherish these moments because we know they will eventually pass.”
Meanwhile, Travis gushed about his older brother during his monologue while hosting Saturday Night Live in February 2023.
“Jason and I actually played soccer together when we were little kids and he was always better than me at everything,” Travis said of Jason, before quipping, “In high school he was an honor student and I got kicked out.” Team because I failed French. And then when we were in college, I actually got kicked off the team because I tested positive for marijuana.”
