Brazilian President Lula has been released from hospital after undergoing surgery to stop a brain hemorrhage
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was discharged from hospital on Sunday after undergoing surgery to stop a brain hemorrhage.
The 79-year-old president spoke alongside doctors in a press conference on Sunday morning and revealed that he is doing well after head surgery.
“I live here, well, with the urge to work. And I’ll tell you something I always said during the election campaign: I’m 79 years old, I have the energy of 30 and the enthusiasm of 20 to build this country,” Lula said.
Lula’s medical team said the operation went well and Lula will be able to walk and hold meetings while resting at his home in the city of Sao Paulo until Thursday.
The leader’s doctors said international travel was out of the question for the time being, but he could travel to the country’s capital Brasilia if the medical examination goes well.
The president also commented for the first time on Saturday’s arrest in connection with investigations of General Walter Braga Netto, a former member of President Jair Bolsonaro’s government and his candidate for the 2022 candidacy involved in an alleged coup attempt. Because of the ongoing investigation, Lula has largely avoided commenting on the case.
“It is not possible for us to accept disrespect for democracy and the constitution. And it is not possible for us to accept that in a generous country like Brazil there are high-ranking military personnel who are plotting the death of a president, his vice president and presiding judge of the Supreme Electoral Court,” Lula said.
Braga Netto was indicted in November, along with Bolsonaro and 35 others, on charges of plotting an attempted coup to keep Bolsonaro in office after his failed re-election in 2022.
Prosecutors have not yet filed formal charges against Braga Netto. His arrest was in connection with the accusation of obstructing the collection of evidence, the federal police said in a statement.
