Arteta hopes success in the EFL Cup can be a springboard to more silver medals

Mikel Arteta hopes a win over Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup tomorrow night will give the club the impetus to win more silverware.

Arteta has been manager of the Emirates for five years, but has only led Arsenal to one FA Cup title in that time. And although the EFL Cup is not the Gunners’ top priority this season, the Spaniard knows winning is a good habit.

Before the round of 16 he said: “I think when you win something different comes into being. Games like this are really important. It brings faith, trust and positive energy.

“It creates the right path to do something different. It gets the momentum going.

“If you win, you make a run and move on to the next competition.

“The team is always on duty every three days.”

Arsenal have been criticized for a lack of goals from play this season and once again failed to find the net in Saturday’s goalless draw with Everton.

“The pressure comes when you are at a big club and you want to give your best,” Arteta added.

“The frustrating thing is seeing the incredible things we do and not getting three points. This is football.

“We have to get the ball into the net. There is very little to say.

“It’s always the narrative that when you score five points you don’t talk about it. That’s normal, but it doesn’t change anything for us.”

Arsenal will be without left-backs Oleksandr Zinchenko and Riccardo Calafiori against Palace, while Declan Rice is “good” but may not play.
