I just read a really good book for patients about spinal stenosis rehabilitation by physical therapist Terri Night: Rehab Your Own Spinal Stenosis: Strategies to Improve the Health of Your Spine. First of all, it is very encouraging that many older people suffer from spinal stenosis and do not show any symptoms. She points out that various factors, such as inflammation and hydration, over which we have much control, play an important role in how severe symptoms can be. She has worked with many patients over the years did I have severe symptoms, often worse than mine, and her symptoms have improved significantly with the strategies presented in the book, including aerobic exercise, stretching the spine and hips, strengthening the muscles around the spine, and lifestyle changes . Finally, surgical options will be discussed if symptoms persist or you have more serious symptoms such as numbness or loss of bladder control.
This gave me some very good ideas on how to adjust my activities to avoid straining my lumbar spine, as well as new exercises to try. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with spinal stenosis.
