According to a federal court ruling last week disputed Following TikTok’s request to delay a law that could ban the app in the United States, the company is now turning to the Supreme Court to buy time. The social media company has asked the court to do so temporarily block The law is currently scheduled to come into effect on January 19, 2025, a brief statement said.
“The Supreme Court has a proven track record of upholding Americans’ right to free speech,” TikTok wrote in a post on X. “Today we ask the Court to do what it has traditionally done in free speech cases: subject speech bans to the strictest scrutiny and conclude that they violate the First Amendment.”
The company, which argued that the law was unconstitutional, lost its charter legal challenge of the law earlier this month. The company then requested a delay about implementing the law and said that President-elect Donal Trump said he would “save” TikTok. This request was rejected on Friday.
TikTok is now hoping the Supreme Court will step in to overrule the law to give the company time to make its final appeal. Otherwise, app stores and internet service providers will be forced to block TikTok next month, making the app inaccessible to its 170 million U.S. users.
