Fridays Women’s March Madness game A heated exchange broke out between UConn and South Carolina when two of the sport’s most legendary coaches got into a heated argument on the sidelines of the game.
UConn’s Geno Auriemma and South Carolina’s Dawn Staley aggressively yelled at each other in the final moments of the game. As South Carolina neared a 62-48 win in the Final Four, Auriemma approached Staley and the exchange began to speak aggressively to her before the conversation quickly devolved into a visible shouting match.
After the game, Auriemma didn’t shake Staley’s hand.

Staley addressed the incident in an interview with ESPN immediately afterward.
“I have no idea, but I’ll let you know, I’m of integrity. I’m of integrity,” Staley said. “So if I did something wrong to Geno, I had no idea what I did. I guess he thought I didn’t shake his hand at the start of the game. I didn’t know.
In ESPN footage before the game, Auriemma was seen shaking Staley’s hand.

Auriemma addressed the incident in the post-game press conference.
“I don’t want what happened there to affect what we were able to accomplish today,” Staley said.
Meanwhile, Auriemma expressed his displeasure with Staley and the referees during an in-game interview on ESPN.
“There were six fouls in this quarter – all against us,” Auriemma said on the broadcast. “And they beat our guys down there (with profanities) the whole game. I’m not making excuses because we weren’t able to get a shot off. But that’s ridiculous.”
“Their coach is ranting and raving on the sideline and calling the referee some insults you don’t want to hear. And now it’s 6-0 and I’ve got a kid with a torn jersey and they’re like, ‘I didn’t see that.’ Come on, man. It’s about a national championship.”
After the game, Auriemma declined to elaborate on the incident.
“I said what I had to say and … nothing … nothing,” he said when asked what happened to Staley, refusing to tell reporters what he said.
“Why would I say that? I said what I said and obviously she didn’t like it. I was just telling the truth.”
Auriemma later addressed speculation about the pregame handshake and his midgame interview.
“I have no regrets,” Auriemma said of his mid-game interview.
“I’ve been coaching for a long time, I’ve never seen a kid have to change his jersey because someone tore it and the official said he didn’t see it. A lot happened in that game. Unless you’re on the sideline, you have no idea what’s happening on that sideline…”
“The protocol is to meet in half court before the game. Has anyone ever seen that? The two coaches meet in half court and shake hands… they announce it over the loudspeaker. I waited there for about three minutes.”
Footage of the raucous exchange quickly spread on social media, and many fans were shocked to see two of women’s basketball’s most respected figures clash so publicly.

ESPN star Stephen A Smith blasted Auriemma for the incident in an X post.
“This was plain bullshit from the GREAT Geno Auriemma. I never thought I would see the day when the best female college coach in history would do so CLASSLESS!!! Horrible sight and something to be proud of. He was OUTCOACHED,” Smith wrote. “Plain and simple. And gets in her face like she did something to him instead of being merciful. If Dawn Staley had acted like that, we would have jumped on her.”
