Biomedical: The first Moroccan genome project

A great scientific progress was currently being carried out in Morocco. The results of the first phase of the Moroccan genome project (PGM) have appeared in the magazine “Communication Biology” of the prestigious natural group. The study lays the basis for a reference genome that is specific for Morocco, a tool that turns out to be essential for the development of precision medicine on a national scale.

Under the direction of researchers of Mohammed VI Foundation of Health Sciences (FM6SS) within the Mohammed VI Center for Research and Innovation (CM6ri), it is based on the sequencing of the genome of 109 individuals from various regions of the kingdom. The work has identified more than 27 million genetic variants, including 1.4 million unpublished worldwide. Publication is a great step forward in biomedical research in Morocco.
