The Cradlewise Convertible Smart Bassinet and Crib (8/10, WIRED recommends) has all the built-in gadgets: a baby monitor, a bouncy function, a sound machine – oh, and AI that learns and responds to your baby’s sleep patterns. When your little one starts moving or moving, Cradlewise responds by kicking the bouncing or noise machine (or both!), meaning less interference with your baby’s sleep and hopefully more sleep for you. You can adjust the intensity of the bouncing motion as well as the sounds and volume of the sound machine via the Cradlewise app, so even with the help of AI, I still felt in control of my newborn’s experience. Bouncing was the key to calming him down when he startles himself a Moro reflex.
Despite all the bells and whistles, Cradlewise manages to be the minimalist version of a chic bassinet. The bounce and noise functions are designed to respond like a parent, so they are not constant and only activate when your baby needs to be calmed while falling asleep. If your baby seems to protest against sleep, the bassinet will respond by increasing the bouncing motion and the noise volume. When you go back to sleep, all functions are switched off.
At the same time, the app acts as a baby monitor for the bassinet. You can minimize it on your phone while scrolling through other apps so the monitor is always on your screen. The camera on the built-in baby monitor isn’t the best quality, but as an anxious first-time mother I still find it sufficient. You can share the app and its controls with your partner or loved ones.
The Cradlewise feels like an answer to the popular Snoobelow, which for a long time was the only smart option you could choose. While the Cradlewise costs more – retailing for $1,999 The Snoo costs $1,695although both are often on sale – not only does it have more built-in devices, but it can also be used by your baby for longer as it converts into a crib. It can also handle toddlers weighing up to 33 pounds. There are no subscription fees for the Snoo, nor do you need to wrap it in a special sleeping bag to use it. Overall, it is an investment that will last you much longer. —Tyler Shane
