Munguia vs Surace live updates
The 28-year-old Munguia (44-1, 28 KOs) is trying to get a quick rematch with Canelo Alvarez after losing to him on May 4. Munguia has fought once since then, stopping fringe contender Erik Bazinyan in the tenth round on September 20.
Today’s ESPN+ main card
– Jaime Munguia vs. Bruno Sarace
–Alan Picasso vs. Yehison Cuello
Picasso (30-1, 16 KOs) is expected to be the next challenger for undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue when he takes on Cuello (13-2-2, 11 KOs) in their 10-round co-feature tonight. Fight wins.
Munguia has an easy fight tonight against Surace (25-0-2, 4 KOs). None of the four sanctioning bodies rank Surace in the top 15. The reason for this is obvious: Surace’s opposition was weak.
It’s unclear why Top Rank chose this opponent for Munguia rather than a top contender. If the idea is to make Munguia look great and ensure he doesn’t get beaten by anyone, ruining his chances of a rematch with Canelo, putting him against fighters like Surace and Bazinyan makes sense.
Ideally, Munguia should show some courage by taking on the top contenders at 168 to speed up the process of rematching Canelo, but he is too vulnerable for that. Munguia didn’t even look good in his last fight against Bazinyan.
If Munguia was ambitious and willing to take a risk, he would fight these guys to win the rematch with Alvarez:
– Osleys Iglesias
– Christian Mbilli
–Diego Pacheco
– Caleb Plant
Munguia is not expected to fight any of these fighters. It’s a business. His next fight will likely be against Edgar Berlanga, who he says he would like to fight. Berlanga is on the same talent level as Bazinyan and an easy target for Munguia or any of the fighters on the roster.
