Bill Haney says Devin will take a full year off to rest his body and work on blocking the left hook before returning to the ring in 2025. Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) has been out of the ring for seven months since his loss to Ryan Garcia on April 20 and appears shaken by the defeat.
One year break
Former two-division world champion Haney’s decision to sit out a full year means he will wait until Kingry’s one-year ban expires in April 2025 before fighting again. Devin’s decision to sit on his loss for an entire year until Ryan is available isn’t exactly brave, but there’s just too much money at stake for him to risk it.
However, this is an expected move as it is too risky for Haney to fight anyone and potentially lose. A loss would scuttle Devin’s potential big-money rematch with Garcia. Therefore, it’s smart for Haney to sit and wait for Ryan, because whoever faces him would be reaching for the fences and trying to take advantage of Dev’s vulnerable chin.
If Haney was one of them Robber barons from the Gilded Age Like JP Morgan, John D. Rockefeller or Cornelius Vanderbilt, he would NOT sit around for a year without being as busy as possible and exploiting his popularity to make millions fighting the top guys. Haney is not reckless He is like the super-rich robber barons and lacks the courage and ambition to get to the last penny by working as hard as possible.
Play it safe?
“All fights are options. I believe in Devin and I believe in his abilities. I also believe in doing things right. I believe that a leader is compensated for the position they are in and has the right contract structure. It’s more about the contract structure than anything else,” Bill Haney told Tru Media, speaking about his son Devin Haney.
“One thing we can do is give him a rest. He’s a young guy. He traveled, he fought and he did something. A lot went into the (Ryan Garcia) fight,” Bill said of Haney.
“He said he will take a year off and I support his plan 100%. If he had said he wanted to come back in four months, I would have supported that too. He said he wanted to take a year off. He didn’t say he was retiring. This year we have the chance to see everyone else.
“We can be a fan. We can follow the sport. One thing I said: They still want to see us. “I appreciate you wanting to see us and following me, brother,” Bill Haney said.
