Africa is planned for a serious representation at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the USA.
Four African Clubs-Wydad (Morocco), Al Ahly (Egypt), Esperance (Tunisia) and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) will compete at the first extended tournament, while 147 African players will perform on 16 clubs from five continents that represent 22 African countries.
“We ensure that the Africans can have a greater say on the world scene,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino in the extraordinary general assembly in Cairo.
In the next FIFA World Championship 2026, Africa was able to see his presentation twice. The Women’s World Championship and the U17 World Championship also open more doors for African talents on the global stage.
“For the Women World Cup, we moved from 3 to 4 or potentially 6 representatives from Africa, and the same applies, of course, for the youth competitions,” added Infantino.
Wydad was drawn into a challenging group G, which includes the European heavyweights Manchester City, Juventus and the VAE of Al Ain. The extended 32 team competition will take place from June 14 to July 13.
During the same meeting, Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Royal Maroccan Football Federation (FRMF), was re-elected as a member of the FIFA Council.
The vote took place during the General Assembly of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, Egypt, where Lekjaa secured 49 out of 52 votes.
At the same time, the South African Business Tycoon Patrice Moteepe was re-elected as a CAF president for a second term without candidates.
