FIFA is considering a suggestion to expand the number of teams at the 2030 World Cup to 64 and to mark a one-time expansion to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the tournament, which was first held in 1930.
This proposal, which was made aware of the FIFA President Gianni Infantino, would change the structure of the tournament, which is to be kept on three continents for the first time in history.
The 2026 World Championship with 48 teams is the first to expand under Infantino’s leadership.
It is organized by the United States, with games also taking place in Mexico and Canada.
The proposal for a 64 team format was introduced during a meeting near his conclusion, where Ignacio Alonso from Uruguay presented the idea and read a prepared speech in English. The expansion plan is discussed on such a large scale in the context of the developing complexity of the hosting of the tournament.
