After several weeks of negotiations, Lebanon has acquired a new government under the direction of Nawaf Salam. President Joseph Aoun signed a decree on Saturday that formalized the resignation of the provisional Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the appointment of a cabinet of 24 ministers under the direction of Salam.
Nawaf Salam was determined on January 13th and led consultations with the various parliamentary blocks to collect their opinions on the distribution of portfolios and ministerial decisions. His team now has to tackle the many economic and political challenges that burden the country.
The formation of this government is a crucial step for Lebanon, which goes through a longer institutional crisis. The European Union, the United States and the United Nations welcomed this progress and saw it as a positive signal for the country’s stability.
The UN representative of Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, said that this government announces “a new, radiant chapter for the country and highlights the importance of the expected reforms to overcome current difficulties.
