Manchester United’s plans for a new stadium took a step closer last night after they received the green light from the Trafford Council.
United either wants to build a new venue with 100,000 seats to replace Old Trafford or revise the current soil and increase the capacity to 87,000.
The club will decide which path should be taken at the end of the season, but both would require the consent of the local council, given the effects on the local economy and the infrastructure.
This was granted last night by an oral vote at a town hall meeting.
Coun Liz Patel, executive member for economy and regeneration at Trafford Council, said: “I am pleased that these plans were approved by the Council’s executive council. As the report says, this is one of the most important opportunities for the renewal of the cities in Trafford and the results will be great for the region and the surrounding region.
“This is an extremely exciting project and works with our partners and private developers. We will try to create thousands of new houses, new districts and a first -class environment for the Manchester United Stadium.
“Together with Manchester United, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Salford City Council, we will make sure that these plans will benefit all, including residents, companies and football fans.”
Plans receive the government’s support
It is estimated that a new stadium in the economy could increase £ 7.3 billion and create 90,000 jobs.
The plans have already been supported by the Labor government, which can recognize the economic and social advantages of such an extensive regeneration plan.
United would finance stadium development, but public money is probably used to renovate the area.
