According to German federal prosecutors, Moroccan Youssef El A., suspected of spying on his compatriots in Germany, was arrested at Frankfurt Airport on Wednesday.

He is accused of having monitored activists from the Hirak Rif protest movement since January 2022. Youssef is said to have worked with another Moroccan, Mohamed A., who was convicted of similar activities in August 2023, and would have received plane tickets in exchange for information intended for Moroccan intelligence services.

Youssef El A. was arrested in Spain on December 1, 2024 before being extradited to Germany. After appearing before a judge, he was taken into custody.

In addition, the Hirak movement, which emerged in 2016 after a tragic incident, calls for development and an end to the marginalization of the region, which led to numerous arrests in Morocco.
