OpenAI is best known for this AI modelswhich currently exist mainly on cloud servers, their website and in their apps for PCs and mobile devices.

However, the company does not limit its ambitions to the software area: today on X, Caitlin Kalinowski, technical employee at OpenAI and former head of AR glasses at Metaposted a message announcing that the company was hiring first roles in hardware robotics.

This includes an EE sensor engineer who “helps us develop the sensor suite for our robots” and a robotics mechanical design engineer who develops “gears, actuators, motors and connections for robots”.

The listings also include a description of the new venture:

Our robotics team focuses on the development of universal robotics and the further development of the AG -Level intelligence in dynamic, real-world environments. We work across the entire model stack, integrating state-of-the-art hardware and software to explore a wide range of robot form factors. We strive to seamlessly combine high-quality AI capabilities with physical limitations.”

Kalinowski herself announced her hiring at OpenAI a little more than two months ago “Leading the way in robotics and consumer hardware.”

Previously, OpenAI had reportedly worked with the former on hardware Apple chief designer Jony Iveand the company has partnered with robotics startup Figure to provide the models for its humanoid robots.

However, Kalinowski’s new position and job postings signal the company’s largest and most extensive investment to date in building its own robotics division and could ultimately lead to the company competing with Figure.

However, it would not be a new place for OpenAI as it also competes with Microsoft and accepts investment money from Microsoft.
