Devin Haney is hosting an open training session in London today
Devin Haney will train in front of his British fans in an open training session in London, England today at 2pm. He didn’t plan a fight.
Haney in London: Looking for UK boost
It’s a strange move from Dev because he’s not fighting a Brit; He has suffered an embarrassing loss and his stocks are low. He seems desperate to take this step, but it shows where he is at professionally.
Things will look bad for Haney if few fans and media show up to watch him practice. However, there will likely be a fair number of British media stopping by to get an interview.
Some believe this move is to build Haney’s brand abroad in the hopes of being selected by Turki Al-Shiekh to fight on one of his Riyadh season cards. By training in London, former two-division world champion Devin will be better known in the British press and possibly attract attention from Turki.
If he wants to add Devin to his cards, he could pit him against a formidable opponent like Richardson Hitchins, Liam Paro or Jaron Ennis. It’s doubtful Haney would agree to fight any of these guys because he doesn’t want to jeopardize his rematch with Ryan Garcia.
Haney’s A-list status lost
In the US, Haney’s stock has plummeted due to the combination of his loss to Ryan Garcia and his decision to file a lawsuit and sit out of the ring without a fight for a year. The way his career looks right now, things aren’t looking good for him.
Due to this defeat, he is no longer one of the top fighters and his chances of returning to his former high status are slim. There is no champion as weak as the one Haney beat to claim his two-division world title.
