Famed musician and composer Mohamed Ben Abdeslam died in Rabat on Thursday morning at the age of 94, after a long battle with illness, his relatives said.

The deceased, a native of Salé, represents one of the pillars of Moroccan song and built a rich artistic career over several decades, enriching the Moroccan musical heritage with timeless works.

The artist, nicknamed “Master of Moroccan Zajal Singing” during his lifetime, signed almost 250 musical works performed by major artists such as Ismail Ahmed, Abdelouahab Doukkali, Naima Samih, Bahija Idriss and Mohamed Idrissi. The deceased also founded the “Ittihad Slaoui” orchestra, directed the Moroccan Radio Variety Orchestra and took part in several renowned radio programs.
