There are many reasons why fans enjoy it Buffy the Vampire Slayer So much, from the compelling characters to the eminently quotable dialogue. And of course, all the great romances fueled by the hottest on-screen chemistry in the history of network television. For many, there was no better chemistry than that between Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, but their hottest scenes weren’t as sexy during production for one extremely strange reason: Whenever Buffy and Angel kissed, she found herself completely out of breath terrible due to crazy Gellar’s crazy pranks.
Bad romance
This bizarre ritual between Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz dates back to her first Buffy Kiss in the first season episode “Angel”. In an unforgettable moment, Angel reveals his feelings to Buffy and kisses her… leading to the revelation that he is a vampire in love with the Slayer accused of hunting and killing his kind. But thanks to Joss Whedon’s DVD commentary, we know that the scene was equally memorable for the actors for an entirely different reason: “They both ate as many horrible things as they could before kissing, just to have fun.”
While Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz both tried to prank each other Buffy Kiss, it was apparently Gellar who kept this tradition going whenever they had to be physically intimate on screen. Her explicit goal (sorry, “shipper”) was to make her sexy scenes as “unsexy” as possible, and the main way she did this was by eating weird things before making out on the screen began. These included nasty combinations like cucumber and fish, which made her breath smell worse than a vampire’s coffin before Buffy and Angel ever locked lips.
More than bad breath
Sometimes Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn’t content with sabotaging her breathing before a Buffy/Angel kiss, opting instead for other hilarious pranks. A good example of this is that she intentionally fastened her clothing very tightly before scenes where her characters were supposed to get hot and heavy. Poor David Boreanaz would have to make sure his on-screen intimacy still looks naughty and nice while making out with a co-star whose clothes are stuck very tightly in place.
On another occasion, Sarah Michelle Gellar decided to prank David Boreanaz on his own show angel Episode “I Will Remember You” where Buffy and Angel did much more than kiss. This was an episode where the vampire was turned human and he and Buffy were finally able to do the deed without him losing his soul. Unfortunately, he realizes that the world needs his vampiric powers and turns back time to become a creature of the night again. It’s a powerful and emotional episode until you learn that Gellar intentionally spilled ice on Boreanaz to mess up one of his shots.
It could ruin the magic if you find out that Sarah Michelle Gellar tried to ruin everything Buffy Kiss with Angel with bad breath and other pranks, but this particular story has a bright spot. All the pranks actually helped the two actors grow closer, and they continued to hang out and have great fun with each other even after Boreanaz started starring Bone. He invited her to the set so they could share in the craft services together, which might never have happened if Gellar hadn’t decided to feast on the world’s treats worst Eating before making out with one of the most handsome guys on TV.
