Robbie Keane has been appointed head coach of Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

The 44-year-old former Liverpool, Leeds and Tottenham striker won the Israeli title with Maccabi Tel Aviv last season and now faces a new challenge in Europe.

He replaces Pascal Jansen, who has moved to coach New York City FC, with Ferencvaros sitting second in the table after 16 games.

A statement on the club’s official website said: “We are announcing the successor to Dutchman Pascal Jansen, who will lead our 35-time league-winning and 24-time cup-winning team, following the signing of 146-time Republic of Ireland international Robbie Keane on Monday.

“The new head coach arrived in Budapest on Sunday evening and will leave on Tuesday to join our team at the training camp in Spain.”

Keane switched to coaching as player-manager at ATK in India in 2018 and worked as assistant to Irish coach Mick McCarthy during his second spell. He later took on a similar role under former Spurs teammate Jonathan Woodgate at Middlesbrough.

He was part of Sam Allardyce’s staff at Leeds as they tried unsuccessfully to avoid unlikely relegation to the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season, but Maccabi then offered him the chance to do it himself.

His first game as coach will be a Europa League game against Eintracht Frankfurt on January 23rd.
