Just hours after al-Assad fled Damascus, several European countries announced the suspension of Syrians’ asylum applications, and some even called for the refugees’ immediate deportation. With the formation of a new interim government in Syria, uncertainty remains over the status of millions of refugees who have escaped the conflict that began in 2011.
