The latest attack follows Israeli air strikes on Sanaa and Hodeida that killed nine people earlier this week.
The Israeli military says it failed to intercept a missile claimed by Houthi rebels from Yemen that landed in the Tel Aviv-Jaffa area.
The military reported the attack on its Telegram channel on Saturday, saying that “a projectile fired from Yemen” had been identified after sirens went off in “central Israel” and that “unsuccessful interception attempts were made.”
A spokesman for Yemen Houthis confirmed that the group had hit a “military target” in the Jaffa area with a ballistic missile.
Israeli emergency service Magen David Adom (MDA) said in a statement that 16 people were “minorly injured by shards of glass from broken windows in surrounding buildings.”
The Houthi attack on Israel came after their attack Airstrikes At least nine people were killed on Thursday in the Yemeni capital Sanaa and the port city of Hodeidah.
The Israeli attacks came after the Houthis fired a rocket at Israel on the same day, but it was intercepted.
The Houthis later claimed the attack was attempted on Thursday, saying they fired ballistic missiles at “two specific and sensitive military targets… in the occupied Jaffa territory,” referring to Tel Aviv’s Jaffa district.
Aggression against Gaza
Houthi fighters in Yemen have attacked Israel and affiliated vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since Israel launched its attack on Gaza on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas-led attack on Israel.
The Houthis say they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in the war on Gaza, in which Israel has killed more than 45,000 people, mostly children and women.
Last week, the group pledged to continue its operations “until the aggression against Gaza ends and the siege is lifted.”
On December 9, a Houthis-claimed drone exploded on the top floor of a residential building in the central Israeli city of Yavne, causing no casualties.
In July, a Houthi drone strike in Tel Aviv killed an Israeli civilian, leading to attacks on the Yemeni port of Hodeidah.
Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden have also led to Houthi attacks on targets United States and occasionally the United Kingdom.
