Why Most Fitness Plans Fail (and What We Do Differently)

Welcome to the start of the Nerd Fitness Challenge 2026!

If you start the year excited And I’m a little cautious because you’ve been here before. You are exactly who this challenge is intended for.

In this first short video, I ask you to start in a place you might not expect.

We don’t start with goals or motivation.

Instead, we look forward to what is normally the case stands in the way

Key ideas from the video:

  • The challenges that derail you are often predictable
  • We identify these pitfalls early on and can avoid them
  • This is how we avoid repeating the same cycle every January
  • It’s rarely a problem of “motivation” or “not caring enough” – fitness plans fail when they don’t take real life challenges into account

Common examples of pitfalls include:

  • An unpredictable work schedule
  • Children (or you) get sick
  • Feeling guilty and taking time for yourself
  • I’m trying to change everything all at once and burns out
  • Frustrated by lack of progress

Your action step today:

Download the worksheet and fill it out Section 1: Pitfalls.

Before you start again, write down two to three things that have thrown you off track in the past – or that make you nervous.

Don’t think about it too much. Simple is better.

You’re not trying to “fix” anything – just pay attention to the patterns.
