What to do when fitness feels like a task …


During most of my adult life I was a full-time fitness specialist.

But I have a confession.

Fitness can feel like a task.

That’s right, even “professionals” don’t always feel motivated. And not my customers either.

This is normal. Nobody feels motivated all the time.

Fitness is like dental floss. You don’t always love it, but you know it is important.

So what do you do if everything feels like another article on your “to -do” list?

First, give yourself permission to feel that way.

You don’t have to be someone who “falls in love” in the fitness so that it is important. Even if you are never really looking forward to a It is still not very consistent.

Second, if possible, it Is It is worth bringing more joy into the process.

In the best case, fitness is not the end goal. It is the amplifier for everything else you love.

If fitness feels like a task for you at the moment, you will find some ways to mix things here:

1. Topic it.

Name your workouts according to your favorite hobbies or interests. (If you love Star Wars, don’t train, you do it Jedi training.))

You can try one train especially built around something that you enjoy, or even one thing, that Steps to Boss battles.

There are also countless thematic cookbooks out there to inspire and enjoy their meals.

2. Tie it back to life outside of fitness.

It is about having energy and health to see in the things you light. For example, one of my customers, Julie, really hated strength training. She knew that it was important for muscle retention and bone health and all the rest. But it was only when we were able to bind certain movements in their training to their passion, archery, that the “task” part of the training became easier to do.

I still remember how she lighted up after she had come back from an archer and something in the way of: “The bow just felt so easy to pull!” (Bow shooting people, don’t come to me when I slaughtered that. 😅)

Conclusion: highlighting the connection between your fitness goals and all the other cool things you like to do is a cheat code.

3. Add games + challenges.

Movement doesn’t always have to be serious.

Add a few games and mini-chalges to your session to spice up things!

End your warm -up with the Stick drop challenge.

Add some movements between the exercises with low intensity such as juggling or going on a balancing beam, etc. to give your brain a challenge, even if your body recovers.

Roll a D20 to determine what your conditioning will look like at the end of your session.

At Camp Nerd Fitness, my Ninja class was full of small games and challenges like this, and people made it smiling and sweating. I remember a motorhome, especially Emily, who came up to me and hugged me afterwards because this approach made fitness fun and accessible in a completely new way.

Conclusion: If possible, tap the playful side of the movement.

4. Hold it just.

Sometimes the fitness still feels like grinding.

That’s okay.

Do not overcome it in these seasons. Concentrate on the basics: a few key movementsEat some protein, move a little every day.

Action is more important than perfection.

Some of these ideas will click, others will not, and that’s the point. There is no one who is liable for everyone here for everyone.

My hope for you is that you can find ways to make fitness additive to your life without taking it over.
