Frank Herbert’s “Dune” is one of the largest and most influential science fiction books of all time. It all inspired by Hayao Miyazaki “Nausicaä des Vales des Windes” To “Star Wars” and much more.
Although the “Dune” book series full of fascinating, bizarre, influential ideas is, the first book remains in particular a master class in which a simple story is told, which still contains a wealth of traditions and world buildings. It is a lived and meaty universe in which you get a feeling of history, politics, characters and actions that move independently of the main story. The story of Paul Areidides may also appear easy: a story about a teenager about a teenager who finds his fate and becomes a guide. For film fans who have only seen The chaotic and yet ambitious David Lynch versionYou might think Paul is a neatly cut Campbellian hero who avoided his father and liberated a suppressed people by fighting against evil empire.
But that would ignore what distinguishes “Dune” from “Star Wars”. Herbert had something else in mind, and when the book readers had misunderstood the point of Paul’s trip, the author used the sequels to make this a warning story about messianic figures and populist leaders. Denis Villeneuve has already made a lot of progress in the production of “Dune Part Two”, very clearly a gloomy indictment against Messianic leaders, but only after Paul becomes the true story of “Dune” begins.

The rise of emperor Paul Muad’dib
“Dune Messiah” is Frank Herbert’s Large counter argument for yourself and the first book: A correction for fans who misunderstood his message and made Paul an ideal hero. In fact, the fairly short book (at least compared to the first “Dune”) is more of an expanded epilogue than a real sequel.
The story takes place 12 years after Paul’s reign after his jihad already brought death into trillions, deletes noble houses and sterilates entire planets. After he suppressed all rebellions and took control of the entire known universe, Paul began to fulfill his promise to the Fremen in terraforming arrakis and to turn the barren desert into a lush, fertile green place. Of course, many people are angry about it, and Paul faces a variety of actions against him who collide and bring him to ruin. There is the advantage (which wishes genetic control over Hausatreides), the distance guild (annoying that you will no longer control the spice trade), the Tleilaxu (which Paul should depend on you) and marginalized groups within the Fremen tired of Paul Like a emperor and not like a warrior and even Paul’s Princess Irulan (Paul hates because she took her father’s throne).
Paul mainly rules by relying on his predictive skills, which also show him the inevitability of these diagrams against him. Nevertheless, the attack begins to play with Paul’s mind, and he doubts his interpretation of the future and finally looks for a way to escape the future he saw. Not long afterwards, Chani dies at birth after the birth of twins, both with Paul’s forces. After Paul killed an assassin who keeps his children a knife, Paul explains that he can no longer see the future because he could not predict that Chani would also give birth to a boy.
According to the tradition of Fremen, the blinded Paul leaves his sister Alia for the empire and sets out into the deep desert to offer Shai-Hulud his life to finally avoid the future he had seen and feared.
The preacher goes into the desert
If “Dune Messiah” was a counter -argument for the military and political rise of Paul Areidides, “Children of Dune” is the counter argument for the religious rise of Muad’dib, the idea of the Lisan al Gaib and Paul with religion is a follower. The book is all about the uniqueness of Fremen as a culture and religion and how exactly it is associated with Arrakis ecology.
When Paul went into the desert at the end of “Dune Messiah”, he not only left his family and his empire – he ran from his advantages. As we see in the Denis Villeneuve films, Paul knows that his future brings unspeakable atrocities and death. However, what the first two “Dune” films do not show is that Paul sees a specific vision that not only falls from him the emperor and revenues his father, but also revenues his father, but A vision for the future of humanity that his son Leto II would describe the golden path. This vision requires Paul to commit even more unspeakable atrocities and oppression and publish his own humanity to achieve this. This leads to Paul finding out what would become of Fremen in his absence under the leadership of his sister alias, how Fremen lost their way, and their culture was slowly fading because of the terraforming of Arrakis – which even made it possible has to live on the Fremen. Paulus Hellbent, both Alia and his own failure to denounce as Muad’dib, arises from the desert years later and is called the preacher.
The death of Paul Muad’dib Areides
The preacher spends most of the “children of Dune”.
Finally Leto II finds the preacher and learns that he is actually his father Paul. The two speak and discuss the golden path, with Paul complaining that his son shakes his humanity away to achieve what he couldn’t. Leto II asks Paul to do one last thing for him: give one last sermon. And so the preacher returns to Arakeen to face Alia (which is by the way Obsessed with the spirit of Baron Harkonen) one last time. In the turbulence, the preacher is publicly murdered by the people who once worshiped him as Paul Muad’dib. Alia then fatally jumps out of an open window to escape the influence of the baron. After her death, Leto II takes the throne and soon becomes the God emperor of Dune.
This is the end of Paul Muad’dib Atrreid, a man who has exploited the old superstition and religious propaganda to get power, and was revered by millions as Messiah, the trillions killed ruin. When Paul went into the desert, he weakened his picture as a deity in the eyes of the Fremen, then the peacher really aroused the sleeper and showed the Fremen how ignorant they were, what happened.
