Residential buildings were hit in the Russian city of Kazan, but there were no fatalities.
Ukrainian drones have struck residential buildings in the Russian city of Kazan, more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) from the front line, taking the war deep into the heart of Russia.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the city, located about 800 km (500 miles) east of Moscow, was attacked by three waves of drones between 7:40 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. (04:40 and 06:20 GMT) on Saturday.
According to the press service of the regional government of Tatarstan, eight drones were used in the attack. Six were hit residential buildings, one hit an industrial facility and another was shot down over a river, a statement said.
Local authorities said there were no injuries. Ukraine did not recognize the attack in line with its security policy.
Kazan Airport has temporarily suspended arrivals and departures of flights, Russian aviation regulator Rosaviatsia said via Telegram.
“High-tech duel”
The incident came amid increasingly brazen attacks after Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested a “high-tech duel” with Kiev during their meeting End of year press conference on Thursday and indicated he would review his claims that Russia’s new hypersonic ballistic missile is impenetrable to air defenses.
At least one person was killed and seven injured after a Russian attack on Friday Hypersonic missiles hit the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.
On the same day, Ukraine attacked the city of Rylsk in Russia’s Kursk border region, deploying U.S.-supplied missiles in an attack that killed six people, including a child.
Ukrainian officials said Moscow sent 113 drones to Ukraine on Saturday night, 57 of which were shot down. Another 56 drones were “lost,” probably because they were electronically jammed.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia also fired an S-400 missile into central Ukraine but no damage was caused.
Moscow launches almost daily attacks on Ukraine with dozens of drones in an attempt to weaken its air defenses.
Russia also continues to fight for control over the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine. On Saturday, the Defense Ministry claimed its troops had captured the village of Kostiantynopolske, called Ostrovsky by Russia.
The settlement is 10 km (six miles) southwest of Kurakhove, which has been stormed by Russian troops and is threatening to be encircled, according to DeepState, a Ukrainian group that is mapping the fighting.
