The authorities said they expected the first waves to arrive on Tuesday (5:00 a.m. GMT, Wednesday) at 7:10 p.m.
According to Hawaii’s Ministry of Transport, commercial flights at Hilo International Airport were suspended to facilitate the evacuations.

US President Donald Trump asked the residents in Hawaii, Alaska and along the Pacific Coast to pay attention to tsunami-related advice.
“Stay strong and stay safe!” Trump said in a social media contribution.
The Japanese authorities said they expected waves of up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) to reach a few coastal areas.
“People in coastal areas or along rivers should immediately evacuate in safe places such as high ground or evacuation buildings,” said the Japanese meteorological authority in a statement.
