Tom Holland’s favorite film of all time is a record-breaking science fiction flick
Tom Holland has had a pretty rough time outside of his Marvel exploits. In 2022 Holland announced that he would be taking a well-deserved break which will probably serve the actor well given his recent career choice. In addition to his role as wall-crawler Spider-Man, the British actor fronted a disappointing adaptation of the video game Uncharted the bloated mess of a film that was the Russo brothers’ “Cherry.” Then there was Doug Liman’s Chaos Walking, in which Holland was caught in a decidedly dark and shockingly late attempt to capitalize on youth dystopian enthusiasm. Even Apple TV, which has produced a ton of great streaming series in recent years, couldn’t help Holland, whose “The Crowded Room” received negative reviews.
But if you’re this generation’s Spider-Man, it’s going to take a lot more than a few duds to end your career. Holland is now preparing for a triumphant return that will see him star in what are sure to be two of the biggest films of 2026. Holland’s “Spider-Man 4” is poised for an unexpected box office hit when it comes to the actor’s other big upcoming role in Christopher Nolan’s next blockbuster. This should ensure that 2026 will be the summer of Tom Holland, as Nolan’s retelling of a Greek epic is set to be the biggest cinematic event of the year, closely followed by the next Spidey outing.
Meanwhile, it seems like Holland has a deep fondness for another blockbuster franchise. Although he has not yet managed to delve into this particular saga, this saga itself is responsible for the actor’s favorite film of all time.
Tom Holland’s favorite film of all time is a relatively new science fiction film
Asked by Men’s Health As for what his favorite film is, Tom Holland revealed that it is James Cameron’s blockbuster sci-fi epic, “Avatar.” With a $2.9 billion The 2009 film remains the highest-grossing film of all time in terms of box office, with the Dutch film Spider-Man: No Way Home coming relatively close with a gross of $1.9 billion. Still, Holland seems more than happy to be outdone by Cameron’s CGI-fest, telling Men’s Health, “I’m not ashamed to say ‘Avatar.’.‘”
Why should you be ashamed? Maybe because “Avatar” is relatively new? Or perhaps Holland feels that some sort of independent arthouse effort should be at the top of his list? Either way, there’s no shame at all if someone has a personal favorite film. Unfortunately, Holland didn’t elaborate on why Cameron’s film remains his all-time favorite, even though Avatar came out when the actor was just 13 years old and was therefore likely one of his defining cinematic experiences.
Interestingly, Holland managed to outperform his favorite film at the domestic box office “No Way Home” overtook “Avatar” as the third highest-grossing film in the US after taking it $814,866,759 to Cameron’s $785,221,649.
A role as the Tom Holland avatar is probably asking too much
James Cameron is currently preparing for the launch the spooky Fire Na’vi clan in Avatar: Fire & Ash. The film is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2025, with a fourth installment following, and since Cameron has already made both films, it’s unlikely that Tom Holland will appear on Pandora anytime soon – unless he has a secret cameo -appearance shot. That’s a shame in a way, considering the actor is in something of a recalibration mode following his non-Spidey-related career moves. Adding some “Avatar” action to his Christopher Nolan and “Spider-Man 4” projects would certainly go a long way toward proving that the man can do much more than just play web-slinger.
Still, I’d rather see Holland try his hand at drama again. Just because “Cherry” and “The Crowded Room” didn’t work out doesn’t mean he should give up, especially since his appearance in Star-studded Southern Gothic “The Devil All The Time” was a decent performance from the Brit. What’s more, While Avatar is impressive, there are arguably far more exciting projects that push the true frontier of filmmaking and seeing Holland welcome some of the new generation of filmmakers would arguably be a lot more exciting than seeing him treated by the Na’vi.
