Three shot dead as gunmen attack Haiti’s largest hospital

At least three people were killed when gunmen in Haiti opened fire on medical staff, police and journalists during a news conference to announce the reopening of the country’s largest public hospital.

Scores of others were injured in Tuesday’s attack at the General Hospital in the capital Port-au-Prince.

Images published online appear to show several injured or dead people inside the building.

The site was retaken by the Haitian government in July after it was occupied and destroyed by violent gangs that control much of the city.

When the shooting began, journalists were waiting for the health minister to arrive.

Two journalists and a police officer were reportedly shot.

In a video statement, the head of the Haitian Transitional Presidential Council, Leslie Voltaire, said: “We express our condolences to all the families of the victims, especially the Haitian National Police and all journalists’ associations.”

“We guarantee you that this act will not remain without consequences.”

The people of Haiti continue to suffer unbearable levels of gang violence, despite the installation of a new interim government in April and the deployment of an international force led by Kenyan police six months ago.

Haiti has been gripped by a wave of gang violence since the assassination of then-President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

An estimated 85% of Port-au-Prince is still under gang control.

According to the United Nations, violence has killed up to 5,000 people in Haiti this year and the country is now on the brink of collapse.
