Ruben Amorim admitted after this afternoon’s 3-1 home defeat to Brighton that they were perhaps “the worst team in Manchester United’s history”.
United were the second best team behind the Seagulls and remain in 13th place in the Premier League after a sixth defeat in nine league games.
Yankuba Minteh gave Brighton the lead and although Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot, Kauro Mitoma and Georginio Rutter added goals for Fabian Hurzeler’s side in the second half.

Amorim then tried to outline the magnitude of the task ahead, with United now closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
He said: “Imagine that for a Manchester United fan, imagine that for me.
“You get a new coach who loses more than the last coach. Imagine that. We have to survive this moment. I know that.
“We are perhaps the worst team in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines, but I say this because we need to acknowledge this and change it. So there’s your headline.”
It’s hard to explain – Amorim
United have picked up just 11 points in Amorim’s 11 games since he took over from Erik ten Hag in November.
The Portuguese added: “It’s difficult to explain, we have to acknowledge the moment and not avoid the problem.”
“Everyone here is below average, no matter the circumstances. It is unacceptable for any Premier League club to lose so many games, let alone Manchester United. It’s a really tough moment, but we have to keep going.
“The opponent is better than us in many details. That we cannot be consistent. That I’m not helping my players at the moment.
“It’s a tough moment. We must recognize that we are in a very difficult situation. All the bad records, the lost home games, the defeats in the Premier League – we are really underperforming.”
“The fans will suffer”
Amorim said he will stick with his preferred methods, even if it means more pain in the short term.
He said on Sky Sports: “It’s clear. I’m not going to change my view of the game, I’m clear about that.
“The players will suffer, the fans will suffer, I’m sorry. I have a way of doing things, but we have to survive this moment. It’s clear to everyone what we’re going to do.”
