As Lifehacker’s food editor, I’m proud to be your resource interesting cooking tips, useful cookbooksAnd Fancy devicesbut there are some things that don’t fit into these categories that I really want to tell you about. There are snacks, kitchen accessories, and even apps that have improved my relationship with food. Here are my favorite food finds from 2024.
Edible finds
Let’s start with the most notable finds that you can actually eat. These products made it onto my list because they were at the top of the charts in terms of taste.
Ona cookies
All store-bought cookies are loved by someone, but let’s face it, some are better than others. Ona cookies are the best prepackaged cookies I’ve eaten all year, and they’re gluten-free, dairy-free, grain-free, and paleo-friendly. I state that I don’t have any of these restrictions or diets and couldn’t get enough of these tiny, bite-sized cookies. I liked the chocolate flavor best for its juiciness, and a close second to the oatmeal flavor for its warming spice and chunky oat texture.
Bettr Bowl
Frozen meals can be hit or miss, but Bettr Bowl pretty much beats it in my opinion. Both the Birria Rice Bowl and the Chipotle Chicken Bowl were easily revived in the microwave and served a decent portion at a reasonable price of $3.99 each. The most remarkable thing is that the flavors were incredible. You can find Bettr Bowls sold at Aldiand on Instacart.
Real primordial soups
When you have big canned brands competing, you can’t convince everyone with “just another” soup. Real primordial soups Be sure to give the eater something special to come back for. The flavors are hearty and filling and avoid being bland without relying on a ton of salt. The same people who make Ona cookies are also gluten-free, grain-free, and paleo-friendly.
Big Picture Farm Goat Milk Caramels
I mentioned these caramels My favorite food gifts items, and they are worth mentioning again because of the taste and texture these caramel candies is perfect. The flavors, such as Maple Cream or Cocoa Latte, are not overpowering or artificial in taste, but rather subtle and authentic. The caramel itself is soft and not the kind that you have to chew through. Additionally, this Vermont farm recognizes every goat lover for the milk they produce to make their signature chocolates and caramels.
Incredible, inedible food finds
These are my favorite helpful tools for making food more accessible and reducing waste – plus a fun gadget that I’ve enjoyed all year long.
Too good to take away
Too Good To Go is an app that connects you with restaurants, bakeries, fast food chains and grocery stores in your area that are selling their surplus or soon-to-be-wasted (but not spoiled!) products at a significant discount. It started as a sustainability initiative in Copenhagen and is (fingers crossed) getting bigger as more and more companies sign up. Read more about it here. The app is freeso check it out.
Dreo BaristaMaker milk frother
I always make room for coffee in the morning and although I usually keep it simple, sometimes I want steamed milk. Not just stirred milk from one of those whiskey things, but heated and frothed. The problem with steam wands is that they can overcook non-dairy milk (which I use). The Dreo BaristaMakerhowever, has presets that create perfect micro-foam milk, whether plant-based or otherwise. My partner absolutely loves it and uses it almost every day.
A reusable bread bag made from beeswax
This Keeki bread bag (Picture above) are made of natural linen fabric with a special moisture-retaining property: the inside is coated with beeswax. If I have a large loaf of bread that I know I’m going to snack on, I can simply pop it into the Keeki bag and tighten the drawstring. The beeswax lining helps retain the bread’s moisture, making it last longer than a paper bag and preventing mold that can easily grow in a plastic bag. Simply knock out the crumbs and wipe the interior and this eco-friendly bread bag is reusable indefinitely.
Reusable cheese bags
I love cheese all year round, but from November to February I collect quite a large collection. I’ve given up using the original crumpled plastic packaging as a storage method for it Reusable cheese storage bags from Formaticum. They are designed to regulate the moisture in the bag so that your cheese stays fresher for longer. Besides, they definitely look a lot tidier than a drawer full of half-dried out bundles of cheese wrapped in plastic wrap.
