Rabat – The seventh edition of the “Affordable Fish” initiative has been a great success since its introduction and has benefited the citizens in many Moroccan cities, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishing.
So far, 2,150 tons of frozen fish have been sold at reasonable prices on February 22nd on February 22nd.
The initiative aims to satisfy the increasing demand for seafood at affordable prices after public outrage is suitable for exaggerated fish prices.
As part of the initiative, the original plan was to distribute over 4,000 tons of fish in Morocco. The number of cities with sales points has now exceeded 40, including Casablanca, Rabat, Sale, Fez, Agadir, Marrakech and Dakhla.
The ministry added that mobile caravans also reach more remote areas to ensure that people have access to seafood everywhere, especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
The sales points have experienced a large number of customers. According to the explanation, almost 400 people visit every location every day. The ministry attributed the strong demand to public trust in the quality and pricing of the frozen fish provided.
All fish go through strict security checks of the National Food Safety Office (Onssa), added.
The distribution will be expanded in the coming weeks by improved logistics and better coordination between actors in the fishing industry. This will help to maintain a constant supply of seafood throughout Ramadan.
Morocco has seen a heated heating debate About the fish prices after an initiative of a young man from Marrakech, who started selling sardines at MAD 5 ($ 0.50) per kilo, demanded the usual market price of MAD 25 (USD 2.50).
He led high fish prices to middlemen or “Chnaqa”, which have long been accused of exceeding the costs. Other fishermen confirmed that the sardine prices are the wholesale of MAD 2.5-3 (0.25 to 0.30 USD), whereby the question asked why consumers are calculated much more.
